How do you move the largest single-masted wooden yacht to be built in the UK since the 1930s?

Spirit Yachts, renowned boat builders here in the UK, needed safe and easy of movement of their latest build, the Spirit 111 superyacht. At 34m and with an unladen displacement of 58 tonnes, this presented a challenge to our designers.

The Solution

A tailor-made bespoke castor designed and manufactured in-house to the customer’s exacting requirements.

Strong enough to be able to deal with the harsh conditions of a working shipyard, whilst offering a complete solution to the customer’s needs. This meant extra heavy-duty, twin-wheeled swivel castors fitted with machined nylon wheels.

In addition, each fork is fitted with a steering arm to aid with manoeuvrability. The castor assembly is finished with a specialist corrosion resistant coating to deal with harsh weather conditions.

The Ezzelift system is ideal for Moving bulky and heavy scenery up to 1000kg load, over a short distance especially if these movements are repetitive.

In line with current Health and safety and manual handling regulations the Ezeelift system will make light work of your scenery.  

Ezeelift has been designed with the audience in mind, each system has individual exhaust valves controlling the drop speed in conjunction with individual in-line values to control the raise speed as well as dealing with uneven loads.

Powered by bottled Co2 or Compressed air (not supplied) the Ezeelift system is fully mobile and easy to use. Each standard systems comes fitted with 4 x Triple swivel pneumatic lifting skates for extra stability as well as excellent manoeuvrability and low rolling resistance. The system can also be supplied with more or less cylinders should you require something more bespoke.

  • Four pneumatic lifting castors
  • 10 bar single stage Regulator
  • 25m stroke / rod length from long lasting polyurethane

Britain’s in love with Bread – But what’s that got to do with the BIL Group?

According to The National Association of British and Irish Millers, 99.8% of British households buy bread and every day we consume over 11 million loaves!

So what is the connection between Britain’s insatiable demand for fresh bread and BIL Castors?

Providing us Briton’s with 11 million loaves a day requires a lot of industrial scale baking ( 85% of bread production takes place in large bakeries) and in turn this requires a vast number of baking trolleys and these baking trolleys require wheels – but not just ordinary wheels – the kind of wheels that can operate hour after hour in extreme heat.

We had a conversation with Kevin Wilson – the UK Business Development & Projects Manager for the BIL Castors and Wheels division. We asked him about the Heat Resistant Bakery Wheel that makes sure us bread loving Brits get our daily bread – and pies and cakes and biscuits and…

Hello Kevin, first of all what is the BIL Group?

“Well, the BIL Group has been established since 1972 and within the BIL Group we’ve got the Castors and Wheels division and Material Handling products, so we are a manufacturer of castors and wheels and material handling products”.

Tell us about these Heat Resistant Bakery Wheels – how did the wheel come about? What drove the idea?

“Well we’re quite strong in the food industry, it’s an industry in which lots of different high temperature wheels and castors are used, some of which are very cost effective and some of which are a lot more robust but cost more to buy. We had a customer who was buying from a rival company and he was having some issues of noise and longevity. We had a standard oven wheel but we realised they would need something better. So in conjunction with our customer and our research and production teams we developed an even more robust heat resistant oven wheel using different compounds into the mixture of the wheel” (at this point I tried to press Kevin on the super-secret compounds used but ever the professional he would not reveal) “and now we are that customers sole supplier”.

So I’m guessing they were quite pleased?

“Yes, especially when you consider that the customer was getting through 1800 wheels a year and now it’s down to 1100. Now not only are we their sole supplier but we now supply that same wheel to lots of manufacturers in the food industry. Just consider the time saved. If a wheel breaks on a trolley you have to take it out of circulation and that means someone has to fix it, remove the castors, that someone has to be paid, it all adds up”.

Why do you think they chose the BIL group?

We have a CAD software team who can supply any customer with a drawing of any product we have in the catalogue and if it’s not in the library they can get it out to our customers quickly and we also have 3D printers”. And it was all driven by listening to a customer and using that experience in quality and design to innovate. But it turns out that the BIL group are not just manufacturers of Super Heat Resistant Bakery Wheels (and material handling products) they are also in the music and show biz Kevin revealed. “We actually supply a very famous studio with staging equipment and some of our wheels were used at the BRIT awards“. Though I couldn’t resist asking Kevin one more time about the secret ingredient in the super heat resistant bakery wheels. Was it gold? Silver? Finally, Kevin cracked “All I can really tell you is it’s an Epoxy resin compound”. And so this is the connection between the BIL Group and your daily bread. (Or cake or pie or biscuits …!)

BIL’s Ergonomic Wheels Lead the Market

We have tested our range of Ergonomic Wheels against other types of wheel material – including our own standard range – and also our competitors.

The results are conclusive…

The BIL/Muvtons Green Ergonomic SRPTA wheel outperformed all other compounds and those of the other manufacturers.

Our combination of the special compound polyurethane wheel with 85 Shore A hardness, in conjunction with the crown tread on the tyre gives outstanding performance.

Our industry leading wheel greatly reduces the amount of effort required to maintain straight-line movement and start-up co-efficient. This will effectively enhance the ergonomics of any heavy dollies or trolleys that they are fitted to.

These are the tests that we conducted;

Start/stop and rolling resistance for push/pull trucks

These tests set out to measure the forces required, in terms of effort, to start a truck moving and then the effort required to maintain the movement. The test results allow customers to choose the correct type of wheel for their work environment whilst ensuring operator effort required to move the trucks is kept to a minimum. The following criteria are used by BIL when carrying out the testing;

  • The same truck used for each test.
  • Testing will always be carried out in the same designated place.
  • Trucks will have two fixed castors at the rear and two swivel at the front.
  • Total weight declared for the test will include the truck weight.
  • The strain gauge will be calibrated annually.
  • Measurement of ambient temperatures and relative humidity.

Testing was in two parts.
Part A is the displacement test which measures the effort required to start the truck moving from a standstill, using the following procedure;

  • The front swivel wheels will be placed at 90° to the front of the truck facing the same way.
  • The strain gauge will be attached to the centre of the truck handle. The maximum force required to move the truck over three feet will be recorded.
  • The test will be repeated five times. If any of the results are greater than 10% of the average force then the test is repeated.
  • The average of the five tests will become the published force/measurement.

Part B is the maintain movement test which measures the force required to maintain the truck motion on level ground over a fixed distance, using the following procedure:

  • The strain gauge will be attached to the centre of the truck handle.
  • The truck will be pulled to start the test over a marked two foot distance, from this point the highest measurement taken to maintain movement over a six foot distance will be recorded.
  • The test will be repeated five times. If any of the results are greater than 10% of the average force then the test is repeated.
  • The average of the five tests will become the published force/measurement.

The Test was conducted according to displacement test procedure.

  • Line dolly loaded with 500kg.
  • Front wheels facing 90 away from direction of travel.
  • All samples tested from all sources are comparable in specification i.e. special grade PU.
